At the symposium “Musik(schul)unterricht neu gestalten” (28/29 March 2025) at the Gustav Mahler Private University in Klagenfurt, doctoral candidate Bernhard Ernst Scharl (subject area Music Pedagogy) presented a lecture performance that combined theory and practice.

His contribution entitled “La mise en scène – Inszenierung als Perspektive auf musik(schul)pädagogische Kontexte” dealt with the role of staging in various pedagogical-performative and theatrical-performative contexts. He demonstrated how music (school) lessons can be understood not only as didactic but also as performative events.

The artistic-academic approach of the lecture performance made it clear that music education can benefit from conscious staging, be it through a targeted design of the classroom, the use of performative elements or through a reflected physicality in the process.
