In addition, he devoted himself intensively to jazz and completed a diploma course in jazz piano at the JAM Conservatory in Vienna.
His artistic work encompasses a broad spectrum, ranging from classical and Romantic piano repertoire, through Chamber Music and art-song accompaniment, to contemporary music, jazz and popular music. Furthermore, he has studied historical performance practice and playing on historical Keyboard Instruments in depth. His teachers have included Wolfgang Brunner (ABPU/Mozarteum), Stefan Gottfried (Concentus Musicus Vienna) and Harald Ossberger (mdw). In the field of jazz, he has worked with Danny Grissett, Dave Kikoski and Steve Ash (USA), amongst others.
As a pianist, Bernhard Jan performs as a soloist, in chamber music ensembles and as a song accompanist. Concert engagements have taken him to Germany, Belgium, the USA and China, amongst other places. Together with the Belgian pianist Marie-Astrid Wybou, he forms the piano duo Duo Delirium, which is dedicated in particular to the repertoire for four-hand piano and two pianos, with a focus on 20th-century music. The duo has performed at venues including the Vienna Musikverein, the Großer Ehrbarsaal in Vienna and the Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
In addition, Bernhard Jan is a regular guest at international music festivals, including the Vienna Days of Contemporary Music (Vienna), Tutte le Corde (New York), Musicorum (Brussels) and the International Vienna Piano Summer Festival (Vienna).
Alongside his artistic activities, piano teaching has been a key focus of his work for many years. His teaching experience includes, amongst other things, more than ten years of teaching within the Upper Austrian State Music School System. In the 2022/23 academic year, he also served as a lecturer in piano at New York University.
In Vienna, Bernhard Jan founded the Vienna Piano School and the Sing & Swing Academy. He is also the founder and artistic head of the international piano competition ‘Wiener Klassik’, through which he collaborates with international pianists, university lecturers and young musical talents. He regularly serves as a juror at piano competitions and gives masterclasses both in Austria and abroad.
Since October 2026, Bernhard Jan has been teaching piano practice, piano as a complementary subject, and piano as a complementary subject for Elemental Music Education (EMP) at the Institute for Keyboard Instruments at the Anton Bruckner University.
