The versatile musician was born in Vienna in 1954 and studied the cello, as well as the piano and composition, in his home city.
His focus is on chamber music; for 25 years he travelled halfway around the world as a member of the legendary ‘Vienna String Sextet’ and performed as principal cellist in Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s ‘Concentus Musicus’. In 2013, he performed his reconstruction of Bach’s St Mark Passion with his own Baroque ensemble, ‘Il Concerto Viennese’, in Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck.
Rudolf Leopold was a full professor of cello at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz from 1990 to 2019.
