Doctoral candidate Hazal Akyaz presented her research at the “Sydney Symposium 2026: Extrapolating the Sounds of 18th- and 19th-century bel canto: Processes, Practices and Pathways”, which took place from 26 to 28 June 2026 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. In her online presentation, “Saving bel canto? Reimagining the Traditional Art of Italian Singing at the Turn of the 20th Century”, she explored the historical development and reception of bel canto around the turn of the 20th century.

At the centre of her lecture-recital presentation was the question of how the revival of Italian vocal repertoire from the 17th and 18th centuries around the turn of the 20th century was shaped by contemporary aesthetic ideas and vocal practices. Drawing on Alessandro Parisotti’s editions and early sound recordings, Akyaz examined how historical arias and contemporary operatic repertoire were performed using similar vocal techniques. By combining source analysis with practical performance, her research explored the tension between historical reconstruction, inherited singing traditions and operatic practice around 1900.
