On October 20, 2024, doctoral student Enrico Coden gave a lecture at the symposium “Actio! Actio! Actio! II: Musicians Are Actors,” part of the Theatre Festival OverActing 2024 in Leiden, The Netherlands.
In his lecture, titled “Embodying the Affects: Flute Music, Rhetoric, and Expression in Lorenzoni’s Vicenza of the 1770s”, Coden presented his artistic-scholarly doctoral research, which explores the impact of historical rhetorical and acting techniques on historically informed flute performance. Presenting his initial findings, he outlined his methodological approach and explained its significance for establishing validity in the context of his artistic research. The lecture also included live excerpts from his case study, performed alongside traverso player Gaspar Polo Baader, thus offering the audience a direct experience of his research not only in theory but also through practice.
