The publication emerged from a research project that served as a precursor to his current doctoral project. The article focuses on three key sources—Michael Praetorius’ Syntagma musicum III, Giovanni Battista Bovicelli’ Regole, passaggi di musica, and Giulio Caccini’ Le nuove musiche—and examines their role in the dissemination of Italian ornamentation practices north of the Alps.
Building on these findings, Van Engen’s doctoral research “Passaggi of the 16th and early 17th Centuries for Historical Trombone: an Ornamentation Method” aims to consolidate a total of 16 historical sources on ornamentation practices from the 16th and early 17th centuries and to translate them into a systematic approach for the historical trombone.
