„Composing Systems - From Spectral Immanence to Post Techno Ecologies"

In this 90 minute lecture, sonic media artist and researcher Hugo Paquete presents the evolution of his practice from post digital explorations of noise, glitch, and systemic entropy to his current research on algorithmic agency and computational ecologies. Works such as Negentropy, Orbital Eccentricity, Zoe: Actant, and Obscure Radiation establish the foundations of a methodology that treats sound as a critical technology for revealing contemporary infrastructures.Building on this trajectory, the lecture introduces developments from his CEEC FCT project AI as Catalyst, including the creation of advanced sonification instruments AEROSONIC and HELIOSONIC, multi agent systems, and unsupervised AI models that function as co creative agents within sonic ecologies. These tools extend earlier investigations into satellite telemetry, electromagnetic fields, biometric data, and environmental signals.Paquete outlines his post techno computational aesthetic, demonstrating how cybernetic ecologies emerge from the interplay between human performers, stochastic algorithms, and real time data. The session articulates the continuity between past and present research, offering new methodologies for human–machine collaboration and an invitation to listen critically within algorithmic environments.

Hugo Paquete, PhD, is a sonic media artist, composer, and researcher whose work merges sound, computation, and critical theory to interrogate the infrastructures shaping contemporary life. His practice integrates multi agent systems, unsupervised AI models, anomaly detection pipelines, and stochastic algorithms as co creative agents within sonic ecologies.Paquete is the Principal Investigator of the CEEC FCT research project AI as Catalyst: Transformative Impacts on Digital Performance, Computer Music, and Cultural Creativity (2026–2029), where he develops advanced sonification instruments such as AEROSONIC and HELIOSONIC, exploring algorithmic agency, environmental data, and post techno aesthetics.Over the past two decades, his work has been presented internationally at Ars Electronica, ZKM, Museum of Arts and Design (NY), IMEB Bourges, PNEM, and Festival Música Viva, with support from FCT, Gulbenkian, Creative Europe, DGArtes, and i Portunus. He is the director of Absonus Lab and a researcher at INET md – Institute of Ethnomusicology: Center for Studies in Music and Dance, Department of Communication and Art, University of Aveiro, and a collaborator at CIAC and iAlab Sensoria.
His current research is supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P., through the project 2024.09158.CEECIND, hosted at INET md.
