In his talk, Prof. Remeš explores J. S. Bach’s distinction between fundamentaler Praxis and Lizenz, tracing its origins to the theoretical writings of Dresden court composer Johann David Heinichen. Drawing on historical sources, Remeš examines four fundamental dissonance functions and discusses their implications for understanding Bach’s compositional technique and its stylistic development in the 18th century.
