Step 1: Video Upload
After successfully registering online, you will receive an invitation to the artistic entrance exam via email. This email contains a link that you can use to upload your artistic presentation in video form at any time.
Formal criteria
The videos must meet the following formal criteria:*
- You must upload your videos by the date specified in our email confirmation of your application (a few days after the application deadline).
- Acceptable formats: MP4 or MOV
- Alternatively, you can upload a PDF with links (SoundCloud, Vimeo, YouTube, etc.) that the examination board can use to view your video.
- Duration per video: max. 5 minutes
- Video size: max. 500 MB
- Number of videos submitted: max. 2
Important: Only videos that meet these criteria can be considered in the selection process.

Artistic criteria
The artistic criteria for your video application can be found in the drop-down menus of the respective institute:
Artistic criteria (Bachelor's, Master's, Certificate Programme)
At least two movements in different styles and tempos, with or without accompaniment
Artistic criteria (Bachelor's, Master's)
- 2-3 pieces of music that correspond to the candidate's current level of training.
- The pieces do not have to be played in their entirety.
- The individual pieces must be recorded uncut (with or without accompanying instrument).
Artistic criteria (Bachelor's, Master's, Certificate Programme)
After registering online, you will receive an automated email with a personalised link to upload your own artistic performance. You will also receive an additional email from the Student Services Department with PDF instructions for uploading your performance (task for an improvisation in the field of music, movement and voice).
Different formal criteria for this institute:
- Upload only one video
- Video length: max. 3 minutes
The first round (video) is not required for the entrance exam for the Master's programme in Elemental Music Education
Artistic criteria (Bachelor's, Master's, Certificate Programme)
2 pieces (1 aria + 1 song), at least 1 of which must be in German
Different formal criteria for this institute:
- The videos must not be edited or cut and must not be older than 2 months.
- Maximum upload size: 1 GB
Artistic criteria (Bachelor's, Master's)
- At least two pieces from two different stylistic periods.
- At least one slow movement and one fast movement.
- The works do not have to be played in their entirety.
- The individual pieces must be recorded uncut (with or without accompanying instrument).
Artistic criteria for Bachelor's programmes
- 2 to 5 pieces in an uncut ‘live’ version.
- There are no stylistic requirements.
- These may also be ‘standards’.
- Original compositions are welcome, but not mandatory.
- At least one of the pieces should be played with an ensemble (duo/trio is also acceptable) if possible.
- Individuality and creativity are of primary importance.
- Basic skills on the instrument, jazz-related improvisation, melody formation, rhythmic responsiveness and a sense of form must be clearly recognisable.
- A short self-introduction and description of your motivation in German or English (why you want to study at JIM, what your expectations of the programme are) must be included in the video. You must also answer the question of whether you would move to Linz in the event of admission.
Artistic criteria for the Master's programmes
- The video should include a brief self-introduction (documentation/presentation of musical skills on the instrument)
- and a short presentation on the concept of the planned Master's thesis.
- The Master's thesis topic should be communicated to other students during their studies at the institute through ensembles or workshops.
- Ideas for this should also be presented, if possible.
Artistic criteria (Bachelor's, Master's, Certificate Programme)
Different formal criteria for this institute:
- For composition, upload 2-5 sound files (in MP3 format) or PDF files.
- For conducting, upload a maximum of 2 videos.
- Maximum duration per video/audio file: 10 minutes.
Artistic criteria strings (double bass/cello/viola/violin) BA & MA:
- A brief personal introduction
- A total of at least two movements from two works contrasting in style and tempo, one of which must be from the Baroque or Classical period (excerpts are possible)
- The entire recording should be made without piano accompaniment
Artistic criteria plucked instruments (dulcimer/ zither/ guitar/ harp) BA & MA
- A brief personal introduction
- A total of at least 2 movements from two works contrasting in style and tempo, one of which should be from the Baroque or Classical period (excerpts are possible), maximum playing time 10 minutes
- The entire admission should be made without accompaniment
Artistic criteria Styrian Harmonica PBA
- Brief oral introduction of yourself and why you would like to complete the course
- At least one folk music solo piece (waltz, polka, Bavarian dance or march)
- At least one piece of music (chorale, yodel, melody or song)
- The pieces do not have to be played in their entirety
Artistic criteria Styrian Harmonica PMA
- Brief oral introduction of yourself and why you want to study
- One folk music solo piece (waltz, polka, Boarischer or march) with a level of difficulty equivalent to A. Schmid: ‘Auf ein Wiedersehen!’; A. Eßl: ‘Dostan Polka’; K. Baschinger: ‘Das Maurerklavier’; A. Maurer: ‘Im Eilschritt nach Sankt Peter’
- One piece (choral, yodel, melody or song) with a level of difficulty equivalent to: J. Pommer: ‘Jodler Nr. 372’; G. Gruber: ‘Dem Himmel sei Dank’; W.H. Monk: ‘Abide with me’; J.S. Bach – from the hymnal by G.C. Schemelli: ‘Der lieben Sonne Licht und Pracht’; F. Schubert – from the German Mass: “Sanctus”; W.A. Mozart: ‘Ave Verum Corpus’; M. Reger: ‘Eight Marian Songs’
