Irena
Müller-Brozovic
Irena Müller-Brozović (she/her) studied piano, school music, and music mediation in Basel, Detmold, and Vienna and is a professor of music mediation at the Bruckner University in Linz and at the Bern Academy of the Arts. Her dissertation, Das Konzert als Resonanzraum, was awarded the Kurt & Herta Blaukopf Award by mdw- University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna.
Her research focuses on concert situations, participatory and co-creative settings, and transformations in the music world. She particularly investigates the interrelationships between audiences, social contexts, and artistic practices and develops the approach of resonance-oriented music mediation.
Her work is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach that combines both scientific and artistic perspectives, is critical of discrimination, and is based on many years of practice. She has worked as a freelance music mediator for the Vienna Philharmonic's opera camps at the Salzburg Festival, for Mozart Week in Salzburg, for the Basel Chamber Orchestra and the Basel Symphony Orchestra, and has been a staff member at Theater Basel and the Bern Music Festival. Her work is strongly influenced by her many years of experience as a project manager of co-creative and collaborative productions and community projects with children and young people as well as artists from the fields of dance, theater, film, sound arts, and visual arts. She was awarded the Junge Ohren Prize for the production "Windrose" with the Basel Chamber Orchestra.
She currently heads the doctoral committee at the Bruckner University and is co-editor of the International Journal of Music Mediation. She is also co-spokesperson for the Forum for Music Mediation at German-speaking Universities and a board member of Musikpädagogische Forschung Österreich (MFÖ). Through her research and lecturing activities, Irena Müller-Brozović maintains an intensive exchange with international colleagues. Since 2025, she has been a member of the jury of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, where she supports the selection and promotion of music education projects.
