Start of the doctoral programme in the winter semester 2027/2028
Application period: 15 January 2027 until 15 February 2027 (23:59 Uhr CET)

Once you have submitted the required data via the application portal, you will receive an email containing a link to upload your application documents. Access to the portal will be granted at a later date. Admission to the doctoral programme is based on a three-stage qualitative selection process:

Please submit the following application materials in either German or English:

  • degree certificate from a Master’s or diploma programme in a subject-appropriate course of study
  • copy of your Master’s thesis, diploma thesis, or a comparable written work
  • motivation letter
  • description and documentation of previous artistic and academic studies, artistic experience, and competencies
  • written agreement of a principal supervisor at the Anton Bruckner University and a co-supervisor at a post-secondary domestic or foreign recognised educational institution (both academic supervision and artistic supervision are required)
  • Research Exposé for the proposed dissertation project (topic, research questions, methods, literature)

A review of the fulfilment of the qualitative admission requirements will be conducted by the PhD committee on the basis of the written submission.

In the case of positive assessment of the written submission, you will be invited to give an oral presentation of your doctoral project before the doctoral committee in an admission colloquium setting in order to demonstrate your academic and artistic potential for the accomplishment of the doctoral programme. You will present the research concept and engage in a subsequent discussion about the research questions, the current state of research and literature, and methods.

Language Skills

If you decide to write your dissertation in English, a sufficient command of the English language is required. We therefore recommend that applicants are proficient in English to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It is not necessary to submit written evidence of your language skills with your application. However, the Admissions Board may ask you to provide evidence of your language proficiency following an assessment of your research exposé and the oral admissions examination.
